When Are Georgia Realtors Actually Georgia REALTORS®?
In everyday conversation, people don’t reach for a “facial tissue” or make a “photocopy”. Instead they are likely to use trademarked names as common terms, even if using a different brand of tissue or copier. In a similar fashion, people often refer to real estate agents and brokers as realtors. However, not all Atlanta real estate agents are Atlanta REALTORS®, and not all realtors are agents. So just what is a REALTOR®?
National Association of REALTORS®
Georgia REALTORS® are members of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and subscribes to its Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. The NAR expects its members to maintain a greater level of honesty and real estate knowledge than required by state real estate licensing agencies.
The NAR Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice holds Atlanta REALTORS® to specific standards and obligations to their clients, to the public, and to other Atlanta REALTORS®. These obligations are generally higher than those set by state law.
More than just real estate agents
In Georgia, REALTORS® don't just buy and sell real estate. They can be property managers, appraisers, or other real estate professionals. What Georgia REALTORS® have in common is a commitment to professional ethics and education in the real estate market.
When home buyers and sellers call real estate agents in Atlanta “realtors”, they are often using the term in an incorrect but harmless manner. People understand the term refers to a real estate agent. However, to real estate professionals in Atlanta, “REALTORS®” is a term that must be used correctly or they risk legal action. Clients who contract with Atlanta REALTORS® can be confident that they are hiring an agent with a special commitment to their profession.
Benefits to agents as well as customers
Georgia REALTORS® get more than just a fancy word to use on their business cards. The NAR provides a strong voice to influence federal and state lawmakers to protect the real estate business. Members receive discounts on a wide range of products and services and access to a variety of educational resources. Conferences allow them to meet other Georgia REALTORS® as well as professionals from other states, exchanging ideas that allow them to practice their professions the best they can.
The NAR has a strong interest in maintaining the reputation of their members. They investigate complaints about Atlanta REALTORS® from either other Atlanta REALTORS® or from clients. Valid complaints can result in fines or loss of membership. The NAR does not have the ability to suspend real estate licenses; that can only be done by the state licensing agency.
When buying or selling a home, Georgia REALTORS® provide their customers with an extra level of trust and qualification that gives clients the advantages they deserve. Your home is probably your largest asset and you should let a professional help you get every benefit out of it you can.
